Terry Gilliam has a new film out! It is crazy! As usual the eye popping production design and manic wide angles abound. There's a lot about it that recalls Brazil but with a far more existential thematic slant. 

However as similar as they are this film lacks the humour that made that film so fun to watch. Although it's equally absurd and has plenty of funny moments, our lead character here and just the general story is pretty dire. 

This is a film full of interesting ideas. I just didn't feel it had any conclusive statement to make and the end seemed to peter out. But I did enjoy the rest of the film. I might need to watch it again, as with all Gilliam film, there's an awful lot going on in the frame.

This has the romantic flair of Jane Austin with the added bonus of not just the women's class struggle but that of race and slavery as well. It's like Pride and Prejudice mixed with Amazing Grace. And a true story. How can it go wrong?

Great performances, handsomely photographed and the story keeps moving along. An affecting story with not much to complain about really. A mis-reading of a costume also gave me an idea for another movie...

I just hope Tom Felton doesn't keep getting type-cast.

But it's very enjoyable, so check it out!
