The Thompsons

Hmm, it's like an indie hipster family drama with vampires. It's not exactly a big twist on the monsters but it has a slightly different film. And despite the low budget it scrubs up ok, though nothing particularly memorable. Could probably have used some better acting in parts...

Star Trek

Watched the new Star Trek trailer and thought I'd check this out again. Make a Chris Pine double feature while I'm at it.

This is the first simultaneous official sequel/reboot/prequel that I know of. They have their cake and eat it too. And it's rather tasty.

I was never a Trekkie, this was a Star Wars household. But I knew just enough to get the majority of in-jokes, references and set-ups. The recasting of these iconic characters worked pretty well I think. And despite his now hilarious lens flare obsession, J.J. Abrams has made a thoroughly entertaining film.

Aww and I forgot about Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Morrison in that little prologue. That's neat.

Well now the've got their pieces in place, can't wait to see where they decide to go from here.

Rise of the Guardians

Yeah, it's just missing that certain something that makes an okay movie a memorable one. Perhaps it's just we've seen all these elements before so many times, not together like this, but still it doesn't feel particularly new or interesting.

There's a lot of great technical work on display, I like much of the natural feeling camera movement, the 3d works great with the multitudes of different kinds of particles throughout the film, and just look at all that Bokeh. But something about the designs just never grabbed me.

I'm also pretty cynical and all that stuff about making kids believe in non-existant entities has always annoyed me, so take that with a grain of salt.  Certainly not the worst attempt at a holiday film though, it was pretty good but I did want this to take off and it just sat there.

The Day

An indie post-apocalyptic siege movie. Kids hole up in a house, people attack, they defend. It didn't hold my interest, the plotting was pretty straightforward and the shot outs were pretty standard. Some extreme grading going on here...

I own the soundtrack now. I'm going to put it on again whilst falling asleep. Terrifying music. Interested to hear about the sequel they are planning...

Watching this again, I realised it's really all just about people trying to get inside Patrick Wilson. I can relate.

Hitchcock

The film did benefit from us watching The Girl yesterday. But it was still a pretty broad and simplistic look at events. The cast all do fine with what they have. I do think some of the choices were a little odd, particularly Ed Gein hanging around. I can see the point but it's so clunky and kept taking me out of the film and ultimately wasn't needed.

Every now and then they thrown in something for fans that makes you perk up but then the stifled drama comes back.

It was okay but it didn't thrill me.

So this is an HBO TV movie about Tippi Hedren's collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock. I'm seeing the Psycho era biopic film later tonight so I thought I'd check this one out first. Cool to see some of the making of my favourite Hitchcock film, The Birds.

But ultimately they made this relationship pretty black and white and it was constantly in danger of tipping over into melodrama. Unfortunately they aren't really able to take their time and most likely didn't have a budget to show more of the filmmaking side of things.

I think there's a great drama to be told here but this telling was a bit of a let down. I'll see how the other biopic fares tonight.

Ooo ok, so anthology movie. Can be problematic. As can short form horror. As can the found footage genre. And this is all 3. Yes, it's rather problematic.

And like all anthologies there's always a few duds and ones that play better than others. None of them really stood out to me as being the best though. The found footage gimmick gets really tired after the first two times they have to introduce new characters and sell the concept and reason they keep filming everything.

There's some nice bits every so often but I'm not sure found footage works well as anthology material. It just gets pretty annoying.
