Wes Anderson's latest has all the whimsy. All of it. It's easily accessible and a very enjoyable farce. Visually stylish and all the aspect ratios you could wish for. And all the actors you could wish for too. I liked the score and great old school style fx too. I didn't quite like it as much as his last film, which managed to have a sweetness to the nostalgia but it's certainly one of his best. Very fun indeed.

A found footage horror film. Another one. But this one had a few pleasant surprises up its sleeve thankfully. A travelogue that slowly turns into what I presumed would pretty silly fun but character work at the start was enough to get me invested in the main relationship and it was quite affecting when the change slowly comes about.
It has the usual jump scares and I thought I had pretty much figured where it was going however it managed to surprise me and get to the usual unsatisfying end point of the found footage film after the first two thirds of the running time. And then the final act is what makes it stand apart from other films of the kind. It's not a big grandiose ending and it still does have the annoying problem so many found footage films have, of just petering out a bit. But it is certainly different and I enjoyed it muchly. Worth seeking out.

Combining horror films ad musicals is something I've wanted to do for a long time. A very tricky thing to pull off though. And for the whole first of this I though they'd pulled it off. A mix of Fame and Friday the 13th and just as fun as that sounds. I really love the set up. And the introduction to camp song was delightful.
Meatloaf!
But as things proceeded the story started to lose momentum. The revelations of the plot couldn't sustain the pace or fun of the first half. But I do like the use of operatic death metal.
It's certainly a valiant effort from first time feature directors though.
