The Nines

IMDB
First time viewed: No
Current Release: No
Watched With: Tyler, Jordan

Trailer makes this look like a horror film, it's everything but. John August has made a big mediation on what it is to be a writer, to create and control characters. Presented in 3 rather distinct but very inter-related parts we see Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis and Melissa McCarthy jumping between characters, and sometimes playing themselves, trying to make sense of everything.

It's a big conceit, one that is sure to loose a lot of people. But ultimately it's a film I enjoyed watching again and one that still intrigues me every time I see it.

Ryan Reynolds is just fantastic in this film. Perhaps some of his best work, especially playing what appears to be the surrogate John August in the middle section. It's a big showcase for him and for Melissa McCarthy. Before Bridesmaids, this is primarily where I remembered her from.

This film never got a cinema release here but it's defiantly worth looking out for, for those of you that are interested in seeing something a little different. It's mysterious and playful and was great to watch again.
