I believe this is the first Australian monster movie. Our answer to Jaws is a giant bush pig. I've finally got around to watching it after hearing about it for so many years.

This film look a lot better than a film about a giant pig has any right too. I looked up the cinematographer Dean Semler, he's had quite the career. And no wonder, there's some very striking imagery throughout the film. No surprise the director also came straight off music video directing. A lot of smoke…

This film plays pretty unfair at the beginning. They set up a perfectly good protagonist, a pregnant american journalist. She's a fish out of water in the harsh outback and her nosy reporting makes her unpopular with the locals. I thought I'd have a handle on where the film was heading but then they bloody well went and killed her off. It's a hell of a fake out.

So then we have the story of her husband and the crazy old loon who's wife and grandson were killed by the beast and no-one believes he. He's out for revenge.

And there are some creepy local thugs that are most annoying but make perfect fodder for the beast.

It was ok I guess, as far as giant pig films go. There's a few jump scares, a trippy dream sequence, an angry mob (that didn't ever amount to anything unfortunately) and a climax in a slaughter house, of course. It's not nearly as cool as some of those "Ozploitation" films but it wasn't dreadful either.
